SGMP Sacramento Chapter Meeting

"Raising Awareness of Unconscious Bias
in the Workplace"

Thursday, November 3, 2016
Presented by Dr. Adrienne Thompson
Buca di Beppo Restaurant

Unconscious biases are created and reinforced by our environments and experiences. Our mind is constantly processing information, oftentimes without our conscious awareness. When we are moving fast or lack all the data, our unconscious biases fill in the gaps, influencing everything from product decisions to our interactions with co-workers. There is a growing body of research surrounding unconscious bias and how we can prevent it from negatively impacting our decision-making. The goal of this presentation is to be aware of how unconscious bias can affect our perceptions, decisions, and interactions. It is aimed at raising awareness, sparking conversation, and initiating action. Identified takeaways include:

* Understand key concepts of unconscious (implicit) bias; and how it can manifest into assumptions, stereotyping and micro-aggressions.

* Identify more than a dozen cognitive errors and shortcuts that can cloud evaluations in decision making.

* Utilize key strategies to rise above unconscious bias and cognitive errors.

Dr. Thompson is Director of Institutional Culture/Climate and Community Engagement with the UC Davis Health System in Sacramento, California.

An Implicit Association Test will be offered to each registered attendee for Dr. Thompson’s use in her presentation.

The meeting is scheduled from 4:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Registration begins at 4:15 p.m. We look forward to seeing you there!
