ABOUT SGMP The Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP) is a nonprofit professional organization of persons involved in planning government meetings, either on a full or part-time basis, and those individuals who supply services to government planners. SGMP is the only national organization in the United States dedicated exclusively to improving the knowledge and expertise of individuals in the planning and execution of government meetings through education, training, and industry relationships. The Society of Government meeting professionals was established in October 1981 in Washington, DC. Organizers of government meetings saw a need for a forum in which to discuss mutual objectives and techniques for conducting business meetings of the government. They sought to create an opportunity to meet on common ground with the providers of meeting services and facilities to review the latest trends in planning and implementing these events. Represented in SGMP's membership are employees of federal, state, county and city government, as well as associations of governmental employees and government agencies (Hoteliers, CVB’s, CVA’s, Airlines, etc.). SGMP is managed by a national board of directors and officers elected by the membership. Affiliate chapters elect local leadership and conduct monthly meetings in their respective areas. The Sacramento Chapter of SGMP was chartered in June 1988 with 37 members and Johnna Meyer as our first Chapter President. Today the chapter is the third largest in the nation with over 210+ active members. Within out Chapter our members hold many accreditations including 19 CMP, 2 CHSP, 1 CHME, 1 CTP, 1 CHA, 1 CTC and 5 CGMP. In addition we have 3 Sam Gilmer Award Winners, 2 President’s Award Winner and 2 Chapter Members that have held the title of National President. The Sacramento Chapter is active in giving back to our community and our members. The Chapter has supported the Welfare to Work Program, Women’s Empowerment, Mustard Seed, Breast Cancer Walk, Saturday Reading Program, Red Cross Relief Program and the Ronald McDonald House, just to name few. Our members have also tutored, clothed and fed underprivileged children. We give back to the members that work hard with and for the chapter by awarding scholarship to the Annual National Education Conference. We raise the money for the scholarship by having fundraising opportunities throughout the year; for example, the Annual Silent Auction, Raffles at the monthly meetings, and special events determined by the committees. In May 2005 the City of Sacramento and Sacramento Chapter of SGMP hosted the National Education Conference. At each National Conference the host Chapter chooses a National Charity recipient and that year it was Women’s Empowerment (WE). The Sacramento Chapter’s enthusiasm for our local charity was palatable and at that conference we raised the most money ever for a National Charity, at over $15,000.00. Other accomplishments for the Chapter include our Award Winning Newsletter the “Pony Xpress.” At the 2005 National Conference in Sacramento we received 2nd place; in 2006 at the National Education Conference in Denver, CO, the Sacramento Chapter was awarded 3rd place for Newsletter of the Year and then in Atlantic City, NJ in 2007 we received the coveted 1st Place Newsletter of the Year award. We are a chapter of hard working, quality members. We are one of the best resources for government meeting professionals in the state.
